Sri Lanka Group Tours for Solo Travellers: How They Work

Sri Lanka is a brilliant place to travel on your own: it's compact, friendly and packed with variety, from ancient rock fortresses to tea hills and palm-lined beaches. Getting around alone is the hard part. Trains sell out, buses are slow, and hiring a private car and driver for one person is expensive. A small-group tour solves all three, and gives you company along the way.
Here's how our Sri Lanka small-group tours work when you're travelling solo, and how to decide whether one is right for you.
Why solo travellers choose a group tour in Sri Lanka
- Costs are shared. The vehicle, trip host and activities are split across the group, so you pay much less than you would for a private tour on your own.
- No logistics. Hotels, transfers, entrance tickets and most meals are arranged. You don't need to book trains, haggle with tuk-tuk drivers or work out bus timetables.
- Company when you want it. You share dinners, the safari jeep and the cooking class with the group, and there's free time in Kandy, Mirissa and Colombo when you want your own space.
- Someone to call. A trip host travels with the group from the airport pickup to the last day, so there's always a person to help if something goes wrong.
How our group tours work
Both of our group tours are 10 days and 9 nights, starting and finishing at Colombo airport. They follow the island's classic loop:
- Days 1 to 3: the Dambulla Cave Temple, Sigiriya Lion Rock, a village tour with a Sri Lankan cooking class, then Kandy for a lake walk, a Kandyan cultural show and an optional visit to the Temple of the Tooth.
- Days 4 to 7: the hill country. Choose Tea Country & South Coast for two nights in Nuwara Eliya, or Ella & South Coast for the hill-country train and two nights in Ella. Both routes then head to Udawalawe for an elephant safari.
- Days 7 to 10: beach days in Mirissa, Galle Fort, and a last evening in Colombo.
You stay in hand-picked 4-star hotels, travel in an air-conditioned vehicle, and get all breakfasts plus 3 to 4 lunches and 4 dinners. Activities marked as optional, such as whale watching or surfing in Mirissa, are your choice on the day.
Rooms for solo travellers
Group tour prices are based on two people sharing a twin room. When you request your place, the booking form asks for your room preference, and you have two options:
- A private room. Your own room every night, with a single supplement. We confirm the supplement for your date when we reply.
- Happy to share. Tell us you're open to sharing a twin room with another solo traveller, and we'll let you know what's possible on your departure.
If you're not sure yet, choose "Not sure yet" and we'll explain both before you commit. There's nothing to pay when you send the request.
Who you'll travel with
Our groups are mostly couples, friends and solo travellers from around the world who want to see the best of Sri Lanka without planning every detail. Groups are kept small, so it feels like travelling with friends rather than on a coach tour. If you'd like to know how many people are already booked on your date, just ask.
Is Sri Lanka safe for solo travellers?
Sri Lanka is a welcoming country and a popular choice for people travelling alone, including solo women. Common sense goes a long way:
- Keep valuables in your hotel safe and carry only the cash you need for the day.
- Cover your shoulders and knees at temples, and remove your shoes and hat before you enter.
- Use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps in Colombo, and agree tuk-tuk fares before you set off.
- Expect some friendly curiosity and questions about where you're from; a polite "no, thank you" is enough with touts.
On a group tour most of this is handled for you. Your trip host and driver know the roads, the hotels are booked, and there's always someone to ask. If you're weighing up a guide for an independent trip instead, our guide on whether you need a guide in Sri Lanka covers the options.
Best solo moments on the route
- The cooking class on day 2. You learn to make rice-and-curry dishes on the village tour, then sit down to the meal together. It is an easy way to get to know the group on the first full day.
- The hill-country train. On the Ella route you ride one of the world's most scenic train lines through the tea estates, with plenty of time to chat or just watch the view.
- Mirissa's free day. Join whale watching or a surf lesson with others from the group, or spend the day on the beach with a book.
- Galle Fort at sunset. Walk the ramparts, then explore the cafés and boutiques of the old Dutch town at your own pace.
What to budget for
The tour price covers your hotels, transport, trip host, core activities and the meals listed in the itinerary. Set aside money for:
- International flights and travel insurance.
- Your Sri Lanka Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), which most nationalities apply for online before they fly.
- Optional activities, paid locally on the day.
- Meals not listed in the itinerary, drinks, tips and souvenirs.
- A single supplement, if you choose a private room.

Frequently asked questions
Can I join a Sri Lanka group tour on my own?
Yes. Solo travellers are very welcome on all our group departures. You book your own place, and we confirm your room option and any supplement for your date.
Do I have to pay a single supplement?
Only if you want a private room. Prices are based on two people sharing a twin room. If you are happy to share, tell us on the booking form and we'll let you know what is possible on your departure.
Is Sri Lanka safe for solo travellers?
Sri Lanka is a friendly and popular destination for solo travellers. Take the usual precautions with valuables and late nights, dress modestly at temples, and use registered transport. On a group tour, your trip host, driver and hotels are arranged for you, which takes most of the worry away.
Which dates are available?
Our group tours run on fixed dates from December to April. See the current departures on the group tours page and request a place; there is nothing to pay until we confirm.
