Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so there's always somewhere dry on the island. But if you want the classic route of Sigiriya, Kandy, the tea hills and the south coast beaches, December to April is the time to go. It's the dry season on the south and west coasts, the sea is calm for swimming and whale watching, and the hill country has its clearest views.

That's why every one of our small-group tour departures runs between December and April. Here's what to expect, region by region and month by month.

Sri Lanka's two monsoons in brief

From December to April, the south and west coasts are at their best, and by January the showers in the Cultural Triangle have usually eased.

December

The start of the beach season on the south coast and one of the busiest months of the year, especially over Christmas and New Year, so book early. The Adam's Peak pilgrimage season opens on the December full moon (Unduvap Poya) and runs until May. Expect some showers in the Cultural Triangle early in the month. For more ideas, see our guides to places to visit in Sri Lanka in December and a December itinerary.

January

Usually one of the driest, sunniest months on the south coast and in the hill country, and a great time for whale watching off Mirissa. Thai Pongal, the Tamil harvest festival, falls in mid-January, and the Duruthu Perahera procession takes place at Kelaniya temple near Colombo on the January full moon. Nights in Nuwara Eliya are at their coldest. Read more in places to visit in Sri Lanka in January.

February

Dry, settled weather across most of our route, which makes February a favourite month. Sri Lanka celebrates Independence Day on 4 February, and the Navam Perahera at Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo, with elephants, drummers and dancers, is held around the February full moon. See places to visit in Sri Lanka in February.

March

Hotter and a little quieter after the peak months, with good beach weather and calm seas on the south coast. It's a good month for wildlife, as animals gather near water in the dry season. See places to visit in Sri Lanka in March.

April

The hottest and most humid month, with afternoon thunderstorms becoming more common later in the month. The Sinhala and Tamil New Year on 13 and 14 April is a big family festival: many shops and businesses close for a few days, and trains and buses are very busy. It's a lovely time to see local celebrations, as long as you plan ahead. See places to visit in Sri Lanka in April.

Whale watching season in Mirissa

The whale watching season off Mirissa runs from about December to April, when the south coast sea is calm. Boats leave early in the morning, and blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins are seen on many trips, although sightings are never guaranteed. Whale watching is an optional activity on day 8 of both group tours.
